OUR ROOTS

Around the world, there are a number of hotels and spas that are asking customers to rethink their understanding of the traditional hospitality experience. From unprecedented architectural innovation (Amangiri, Utah), to integrating the rich traditions of local Indigenous communities (Yaan, Mexico), to rebooting local wellness practices (Shi-Shi Iwa House, Japan), these hotels are pushing boundaries and demonstrating how a hotel experience can be transformative well beyond a guest’s stay.

With the rapid growth of hotel alternatives, such as Airbnb, it is clear consumers are seeking more. In response, hotels are transforming into social hubs, learning centers, and meaningful cultural spaces. Moreover, new subcategories of hotels such as “landscape” (The Juvet, Norway) and “conscious” (Conscious Hotels, Amsterdam) are emerging. These eco-based hotel subcategories are tapping into the modern consumers longing to both connect with nature and contribute to protecting it.

With the exception of a few hotel innovators, such as Fogo Island Inn (Newfoundland), Canada has not kept up with the international demand for innovative, eco-based hotel offerings. Consumers, particularly younger ones, continue to travel outside Canada for a “cool” hotel experience. Whether it is going to the ION Hotel in Iceland to witness the Northern Lights or to the Post Ranch Inn in California for metaphysical healing, people are hungry to soak up meaningful experiences.

Despite the limited ability for international travel due to COVID-19, people haven’t lost their desire to travel and explore. Ontario consumers are flocking to already popular local destinations, like Prince Edward County, and many are discovering how incredible local travel can be. As consumers adjust where and how they travel, they are exploring regions closer to home. We believe there is an incredible opportunity to integrate meaningful experiences and sustainable accommodation which rivals the international competition.
